A sustainable win with new soft plastic recyclable bags

By July 29, 2020News

Chantal Organics is committed to sustainability and we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact. This includes taking a closer look at how we package our products.

When choosing packaging for our dry goods, our priority is always to protect the quality of the organic ingredients to ensure they maintain their freshness and also diminish food waste from spoilage. Along with many New Zealanders, we are concerned about plastic waste, so it was important that our packaging was part of a full circle of sustainability. This means the packaging completes the cycle of its life, preferably in NZ, with as little impact on the environment as possible.

With this in mind, we reached the decision to use soft plastic recyclable bags, that are also made with 25% recycled plastic content. Plastic material can be reused time and time again. The recycled plastic that has been reused in our packaging has been diverted from the landfill. And that, we are rather pleased about! Find out why we felt this was a more future-proof solution than compostable bags here.

As part of our sustainable journey, we will continue to work with our key packaging partner Cas-Pak Sustainable Future NZ to transition the full range of dry goods into this recyclable plastic pouch. As the world is quickly changing, so is innovative packaging technology and we will continue to work with our suppliers to offer the most up-to-date packaging solutions that can be utilised in the recycling infrastructures in NZ.

All of our new recyclable plastic pouches can be dropped into the Love NZ Soft Plastic Recycling bins at supermarkets and other participating stores in NZ. Find out if there is a drop off near you here. At this point, soft plastic recycling is not being accepted in kerbside recycling due to a lack of systems and infrastructure in NZ, however the government has plans to invest in this.
